Acceptable primary medical qualifications
To apply for registration as a medical practitioner in New Zealand, or to sit the New Zealand Registration Examination (NZREX Clinical), you must have a recognised primary medical qualification from a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools .
If the medical school is located outside of Canada or the United States of America, the qualification must have been awarded during the graduation years for which the medical school meets the eligibility requirements for ECFMG Certification, as indicated by way of the ECFMG Sponsor Note.
The World Directory of Medical Schools is an extensive and regularly-updated list of all the medical schools in the world and includes accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive information on each one.
The Directory has been developed through a partnership between the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the University of Copenhagen.
The information you'll find in the directory is a comprehensive compilation of the IMED and Avicenna directories. If your university medical school is listed, and includes an ECFMG Sponsor Note , you can take the next step in determining your pathway to registration by using our self-assessment tool.
