Our fees
List of our fees effective from 1 July 2024
The Medical Council is committed to operating in a cost effective manner. All fees and disciplinary levies are calculated on a full cost recovery basis. The Council receives no government funding.
All fees are expressed in $NZ and include GST of 15%
Setting of fees
All fees and disciplinary levy are set by the Medical Council under sections 130 and 131 of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (the Act).
The Council abides by the Office of the Auditor-General’s good practice guidelines, “Charging fees for public sector goods and services”, as well as Treasury guidelines, when setting fees and levies.
All fees are set under the principles of full cost recovery and "user pays" to ensure no cross subsidisation occurs.

¹ Annual retention fee
From 1 July 2024, non-practising doctors who wish to remain on the medical register will need to pay an annual retention fee. This decision came after a review of Council’s fees and a consultation with the profession and key stakeholders.
Council’s primary purpose is ensuring the protection of public health and safety. The annual retention fee has been introduced to ensure that all registered doctors contribute to the costs incurred by Council in upholding the standards of the profession (previously these costs were borne solely by practising doctors, through their practising certificate fee and disciplinary levy). The fee will help fund disciplinary processes and the costs of keeping the register up to date and communicating with non-practising doctors.
For non-practising doctors that do not wish to be retained and are removed from the register, subsequently wish to resume practising medicine in New Zealand, you will, with some exceptions have a right to apply for restoration to the register.
If you have any questions or require further information regarding the retention fee, please contact us.
