Revised statement on Treating yourself and those close to you
Council is pleased to publish its revised statement on Treating yourself and those close to you (previously Providing care to yourself and those close to you), in effect from 14 October 2024.
Thank you to those who shared their thoughts when we consulted on this statement earlier in the year. A wide range of submissions (139) were received from doctors and key stakeholders across the sector and some common themes emerged. Council has listened to your feedback – we hope you can see your comments reflected in this statement.
The main changes relate to:
- Allowance made for one-off management of minor ailments
- Accommodating the challenges faced by doctors in rural, remote and under-served communities
- Emergency situations
If you have any questions about this statement, please get in touch.

Doctors are often asked for input by their family and friends. This may include requests for medical advice or a prescription, or more substantial involvement such as performing a procedure. This statement explains why doctors must avoid treating themselves and those they have a close personal relationship with.
